On January 14, 1945, a Short Stirling heavy bomber, serial number EH988, was on a non-combat flight from RAF Winthorpe in Nottinghamshire, destined for Northern Ireland where it was to be decommissioned. During the flight, the aircraft suffered a critical power loss when one of its four engines failed.
