Between July 7 and 9, there were over 23,000 lightning strikes province-wide, sparking nearly 200 new wildfires. Most of this activity occurred within the Prince George and Northwest Fire Centres. The high number of new lightning starts can be attributed to exceptionally dry conditions that have made forest fuels highly susceptible to ignition. The 2023 wildfire season has been long and challenging.
