The Dawson’s Burrowing Bee, or Mungurragurra, doesn’t live in a hive, instead it spend most of its time underground. From July to September they gnaw their way to the surface, to mate and forage for food, leaving a distinct trail across the Gascoyne region in Western Australia’s north-west. One of Australia’s largest bees are currently active at Wooleen Station in WA's Murchison region. The Dawson's burrowing bee is a solitary, ground-nesting bee and females burrow into bare clay to make their nest — like in this video. An active site can contain up to 10,000 nests. Males play no part in nest building and serve only to ensure that all the females are fertilised. Females shelter in the burrow overnight, while males roost on nearby vegetation. The nest shaft falls to a depth of 15-30

Happy Australian Pollinator Week! Today, we're highlighting the Dawson's burrowing bee 🐝 These bees are known for their vicious mating rituals, where larger males dominate the emergence holes around nesting areas. Austalian native social bees are generally small, black and stingless. They live in colonies and and feed on pollen and nectar not unlike European honey bees, but that's where a lot of their similarities end. Our native bees not only look very different but also have a very different way of making their brood, honey and nests! Meet the Blue Banded Bee from Australia! 🇦🇺🐝The blue banded bee is a stunning native pollinator with its distinctive blue stripes. These bees are not just pretty to look at; they play a vital role in our ecosystem. 🌸🔹 Super Pollinators: Known for their “buzz pollination” technique, blue banded bees vibrate flowers to release pollen, making them essential for crops like tomatoes. 🍅🌿🔹 Solitary Bees: Unlike honeybees, blue banded bees are solitary, nesting in burrows or soft mortar. 🏡🔹 Ge
