When Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1950, one unimaginative headline read, "A 32-year-old housewife and part-time secretary has won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for “Annie Allen,’ a ballad of Chicago Negro life." She was best known for her most famous poem, "We Real Cool" (1950).
