Chanute Air Force Base is a decommissioned United States Air Force facility, located in Champaign County, Illinois, south of and adjacent to Rantoul, Illinois, about 130 miles (210 km) south of Chicago. Its primary mission throughout its existence was Air Force technical training.

It included a barber shop, post office, communications office, mess hall, post exchange (PX), bakery, issue room, day rooms, library, and study halls when it was completed in 1940. At that time, it was one of the largest military buildings in the United States. It is significant element of the Chanute AFB Historic District.

White Hall was built in 1939-1940 of concrete and masonry, and encompasses approximately 435,000 square feet. Its physical condition is very poor and poses a potential health and security hazard to the Rantoul community.

Oct 30, 2010 · White Hall (Buckingham Palace) located in Chanute Field Historic District in Rantoul IL was built as 2200 man barrack and mess hall. It was in use from 1930 to 1993. In 1954 it was remodeled and converted to offices and classrooms.
