The art of the royal kingdom of Benin is an unravelling of untold stories. Today, Benin exists as a state in Southern Nigeria and the role of the Oba is more ceremonial than political.

Benin art is the art from the Kingdom of Benin [1] or Edo Empire ... warrior bells, hip ornaments, and much more to both protect their bodies and as a display of warriors of the Oba. [32] [33] An example of a 19th-century Benin ivory leopard carving is found in the British Museum. [34]

During the 16th century, coastal trade made brass amply available in the Kingdom of Benin. King Esigie (reigned about 1504–about 1550) exploited the inflow by commissioning his court’s brass casters to make commemorative plaques for his palace. The warrior depicted here wears a coral-studded cap and collar indicating his rank.
