Many families in North and Central Alabama woke up to a winter wonderland Friday morning. It’s a rare sight in Alabama, and parts of Mississippi and Georgia were also hit with some snowfall. Emma Mitchell of Birmingham woke up to the unexpected scene.

As a wave of cold weather brought snow and sleet to the Deep South, Alabama residents focused on safety as well as fun.

It is currently snowing in the Tennessee Valley! We will all get mostly snow through through the early morning hours. However by late breakfast time counties south of the Tennessee River will develop a dominant wintry mix overhead with freezing rain and sleet.
