A major fire at one of the world's largest battery storage plants was a 'wake-up call' for the industry, official says - MSNNorth County Fire Protection District Chief Joel Mendoza said at the press conference that every battery rack inside the facility has a "fire suppression system," but it wasn't enough.
About 80% of the plant, and the lithium batteries it housed, were consumed in the fire, said Joel Mendoza, chief of the North Monterey County Fire Department, at a Saturday press conference.
“The point is to reduce the fire risk by disconnecting these batteries from each other,” said Chief Joel Mendoza of the North County Fire Protection District of Monterey County.
