Tropical Storm Chantal, the first of the year to impact the coast, is expected to hit Georgetown County early Sunday and linger for 12 hours, then move on.

Tropical storm conditions will be confined to the center of the storm where winds will gust past 50 mph on the beaches where the storm comes ashore. Heavy rain will be the main threat from Chantal as the center of the storm will easily drop 3-6+ inches of rain along portions of the coast.

The Charleston area missed most of the feared Tropical Storm Chantal's impacts, but rip currents are still a threat on July 6, especially with vacationers.

As of 8 p.m. Saturday, July 5, Tropical Storm Chantal was moving to closer to the South Carolina coast, and a tropical storm warning remained in effect for New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hatched areas on the National Hurricane Center's tropical outlook map indicate "areas where a tropical cyclone — which could be a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane — could develop," said National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.
