The alala, or Hawaiian crow, is endemic to our islands, but due to impacts from introduced predators (such as cats and mongooses), loss of habitat, and diseases, they are now extinct in the wild.
Mamaki is also an important food source for the endangered alala (Hawaiian crow). A member of the nettle family (Urticaceae), mamaki lacks the stinging hairs of its continental cousins.
