A major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 initially triggered a tsunami warning, later downgraded to an advisory, for the southern Alaska Peninsula.

A lightly populated stretch of Alaska’s southern coast was under a tsunami warning Wednesday after a strong earthquake was felt throughout the region, and officials in the Pacific Northwest were evaluating whether there was any threat to coastlines there.

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the Alaska Peninsula on Wednesday afternoon, July 16. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake off Sand Point, Popof Island, which is located in the center of the Alaska Peninsula,
