Southwest Airlines has entered a sale-leaseback transaction involving 36 of its Boeing 737-800s with US lessor Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management.

Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) announced on Tuesday the sale and leaseback of 36 Boeing 737-800 aircraft in a deal with Babock & Brown Aircraft Management, which is known as one of the world's leading aircraft lessors.

Executing on a fleet strategy announced during its recent investor day, Southwest Airlines has entered into a sale-leaseback transaction for 36 Boeing 737-800s.

Southwest Airlines ( (LUV) ) has issued an announcement. Southwest Airlines Co. has completed a sale-leaseback transaction with BBAM for 35 of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, resulting in gross proceeds of $871 million and expected gains of $92 million for Q4 2024.

Southwest Airlines Co. will gain $92 million from selling and leasing back 35 of its Boeing Co. 737-800 aircraft, the first move in the carrier’s broader plan to monetize part of its large fleet and extensive aircraft order book.

Southwest Airlines said on Tuesday it had entered into a deal to sell and lease back 36 of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management, helping the carrier raise cash and ease the pressure on its balance sheet.

Southwest in 2024 unveiled a plan to improve its finances. The Dallas-based airline says this is an "important step" in that process.
