Crypto sleuths join hunt for $1.5bn stolen in biggest ever heist
A company which fell victim to what's thought to be the world's biggest ever theft is seeking to recover some of its losses by crowdsourcing online bounty hunters. Last week, hackers believed to be from North Korea's notorious Lazarus Group stole $1.46bn (£1.1bn) of cryptocurrency from ByBit, a crypto trading platform.
North Korea’s US$1.5 billion heist puts crypto on notice
Crypto thefts by North Korea-linked hackers more than doubled last year to US$1.34 billion, accounting for about 60 per cent of the total, according to researcher Chainalysis. The Bybit hack means exploits attributed to the regime have already surpassed that amount in 2025.
Bybit has already paid more than $4 million to bounty hunters who helped trace and freeze some of the stolen funds.
