A Texas district has joined a growing list of U.S. schools warning of a dangerous social media trend encouraging students to destroy Chromebooks.

The Maryland Fire Marshall alerted parents to a social media challenge involving Chromebooks that has been linked to recent fires.

The Chromebook Challenge, named for Google's line of laptops, encourages students to insert metal items into the USB port on their school-issued computers, intending to create sparks, smoke and possibly a fire.
