Camp Mystic owners successfully appealed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to redesignate some buildings that had been considered part of a flood-hazard zone.

Federal regulators approved numerous appeals to remove Camp Mystic’s buildings from their 100-year flood map dating back to 2013 under former President Barack Obama and 2019 under the first Trump administration, according to a report. Severe flooding led to the death of children and counselors from the camp in Texas last week.

Records reveal FEMA repeatedly granted Camp Mystic’s appeals to remove buildings from flood hazard zones, years before the deadly floods killed 27.

There are questions over why oversight was eased at Mystic Camp as it expanded in a hazardous floodplain, the AP reported.
